Dr Michael Short is a Senior Lecturer of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Surrey in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Sustainability Fellow in the Surrey Institute for Sustainability. He received his B.Sc. (2011) and Ph.D. (2017) from the University of Cape Town before spending 2 years working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University with Prof. Larry Biegler. Since joining Surrey in December 2019, his research team works on applying mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques to develop software for decision support in a wide range of fields including energy planning, beer brewing, sustainable future processes, heat integration, reactor design, real-time optimisation of industrial processes, and pharmaceuticals. He is currently the principal investigator on an artificial intelligence for net zero EPSRC-funded project investigating optimal control for anaerobic digestion, was previously an Impact Acceleration Account Commercialisation Fellow, and has held several other research grants on real-time optimisation and control and decarbonisation of energy systems.
